NSW Liberal/Nationals Support Taxi Black Ribbon Campaign E-mail

Shadow Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian today gave her support to the Australian Taxi Drivers Association’s black ribbon campaign following the death of taxi driver, Robert Woodger, last week.

“The Australian Taxi Drivers Association campaign to fly black ribbons in memory of Mr Robert Woodger, is a reminder to us all of the concerns shared by taxi drivers regarding their safety when they are on duty – particularly late at night," Ms Berejiklian said.

“A taskforce set up by the Minister for Transport, Mr Watkins, last year to investigate driver safety and security issues in the taxi industry, was meant to report its findings to the Mr Watkins late last year* but it is now six months overdue," she said.

“Mr Watkins must inform the community when the recommendations of the taskforce will be made available to the public.

“The sooner the recommendations of the taskforce’s investigations are made public – the sooner the recommendations to improve safety and security in the taxi industry can be implemented.

“Taxi drivers and passengers alike want to ensure that taxi services in NSW are safe and reliable.

“Taxis are an integral part of the public transport system in New South Wales and if there are measures that can be taken to improve both driver and public confidence in the system, those measures should be considered and implemented as soon as possible," Ms Berejiklian said.
