Born to Australian parents in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, Greg Aplin lived the early part of his life in central and southern Africa, gained a BA Honours at the University of Cape Town and began a career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
He completed compulsory National Service from 1975 to 1977. Resuming work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greg was then posted to Sydney for three years and travelled widely throughout Australia. In 1980 he returned to the new Zimbabwe to work on State visits and regional development.
In 1981 Greg returned to Australia and embarked upon a new career in regional television which took him from Wollongong to Orange and finally to Albury where he was station manager of Prime TV (AMV 4) for thirteen years.
Greg and his wife Jill have four children and he enjoys travel, theatre, film, tennis, cricket, bushwalking and skiing. He is a keen Rotarian, having served as President of his Club, acted as MC for District Conferences and been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.
He won preselection for the Liberal Party in 2002 and was successful in the 2003 election, being elected as the Member for Albury. He has served on the Standing Committee for Natural Resource Management and the Public Accounts Committee. He was appointed as a Shadow Parliamentary Secretary in September 2005, Shadow Housing Minister in April 2006, Shadow Minister for Justice and Shadow Minister for Emergency Services in November 2006. Following re-election in March 2007, Greg was appointed as Shadow Minister for Mental Health, for Emergency Services and for Aboriginal Affairs and in December 2008 was appointed Shadow Minister for Fair Trading.
